The Best Exercise for Getting to Grips with Your Heart

Life can get so crazy.

One thing piles on top of another.

And before you know it, you don’t have any space for you – no space for your heart.

You think to yourself, ‘How can I balance life when I can’t even find one second for myself’?

That’s a really important question.

And the question contains the answer.

So that’s where we’re going to start.

Find a Second for Yourself

Life feels overwhelming.

And if you don’t do something about it, it will almost certainly stay that way.

In physics, the law of inertia, stated simply, says that:

An object at rest remains at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion, maintaining the same velocity and in the same direction, unless they are disturbed by a force.

In the same way, when your life gets out of control and is speeding along at a million miles an hour, it’s going to remain that way until you (or someone else) disrupts it.

So the answer to, “How can you find a second for yourself?”, is to make it a priority.

If that sounds too simplistic, it’s actually not.

As you already know, it’s a very hard thing to achieve. And it won’t happen on its own. It will take a concerted effort.

Which is why it’s worth giving your full attention.

If you want to take back control of your life and make room to connect with your heart, you’re going to have to do it by force.

And, like everything, it starts with one step.

Find a second for yourself.

And what better moment to start than this one?

So if you’re willing to give your heart a second, let’s look at what to do with it…

Make Room for Your Heart

When I say heart,  I’m talking about the part/s on the inside of you that are deeper than even your conscious thoughts.

The bits you know are most you, even though they are hard to quantify.

The bits that get lost amongst the noise of an overcrowded life.

Nobody really knows what that is so we just refer to it using words like heart and soul.

Whatever you want to call it is fine. Just acknowledging that it exists is powerful.

This step is the first step in making room for your heart.

But how do you really connect with that part?

You can do it by simply turning your focus inwards but if this is not something you’ve done much of before, you can easily get discouraged.

That’s where Your Structural Survey comes in.

Your life is like a building.

You have the parts that you and everyone else can see – above ground.

And the parts that exist within you that no one (not even you) can see – below ground.

In my book, Dig Deep, Stand Tall: How‌ ‌to‌ ‌Connect‌ ‌with‌ ‌Your‌ ‌Heart,‌ ‌Take‌ ‌the‌ ‌Limits‌ ‌Off‌ ‌of‌ ‌Life,‌ ‌and‌ ‌Finally‌ ‌Reach‌ ‌Your‌ ‌Dreams‌, I introduce an exercise that I call, Your Structural Survey.

It is a simple but profound exercise that helps you to connect with your heart by getting you to answer deep questions.

The term structural survey is taken from engineering and describes the assessment that a structural engineer carries out on a house to see what its current condition is.

It is also used to identify what work needs to be done to make the building safe and habitable.

Your Structural Survey exercise works in the same way, helping you to see the condition of your life and identify areas that need your attention.

How Your Structural Survey Works

The exercise starts with this invitation:

To start, find an environment free from distractions where you can be unselfconscious and honest with yourself. That’s the only requirement for these exercises.

It then invites you to gently turn your attention inwards.

There follows a series of prompts, like, ‘Feelings’, ‘Problems’, ‘Ideas’, and ‘Worries’, to help you start to get in touch with your heart.

You are invited to record the things that you notice as you look inwards and connect with your heart.

This works for anybody, but may have more of a profound effect if this type of practice is new to you.

What’s So Special About That?

It doesn’t sound like much, I know.

But it’s not really something to be talked about.

It’s something you have to take part in and practice to get the benefit.

The thing that’s special about it is that it’s gently moving your focus from the hustle and bustle of the whirlwind that is life and giving your true self the attention it deserves.

In those moments where you feel lost, and fear you may be consumed by the mayhem and turmoils of life, you need an anchor.

Connection with your heart is that anchor.

And the more connected you are, the more you can navigate the storms of life.

What to Expect from the Exercise

This exercise alone can change your life.

It can begin to move things from completely stuck to moving in the direction you want your life to go.

And it can give you more of an understanding of your deep-self and a stronger sense of autonomy.

But all those things are vague and hard to quantify.

That’s why I created two other exercises to go along with it. I will discuss the other two exercises – Your Structural Analysis and Your 1/5/10 Plan – in later posts.
